User Interface Designer | What They Do and How to Brief One

A user interface designer owns the visual and interactive layer of a product: how screens look, what is tappable, and how states read under real use. This article is that education guide—what the role covers and what to put in a brief. It is not the hire page. For effective UI patterns and what makes a good interface, see interface design principles. When you are ready to engage a studio, use UI design.

Task flows and research sit closer to UX design. Role comparisons belong on UX designer vs UI designer. Mobile-specific process notes live in mobile app UX design. This page stays on briefing a UI designer.

What a UI designer actually owns

UI work turns structure into something people can scan and use. Typical scope includes:

  • Layout, hierarchy, spacing, and visual rhythm across key screens
  • Typography, color, iconography, and component consistency
  • Interactive cues: buttons, forms, navigation, and micro-states
  • Empty, loading, error, and success treatments on critical paths
  • Handoff-ready design files—not production engineering

A UI designer does not replace product strategy or development. They make the interface clear once flows and constraints are known—or flag when those are still missing.

UI vs UX—brief, then move on

Keep the distinction light and practical. UI is presentation and interaction polish. UX is whether the journey and information architecture make sense. If flows are still open, start with UX or a wireframe pass. If flows are locked and the product looks unfinished, brief UI. Do not paste both scopes into one vague request.

What to put in a UI designer brief

  • Primary screens and the job each screen must support
  • Devices: phone, tablet, desktop—or an honest subset
  • Brand files: logo, colors, type, and anything that cannot change
  • Locked wireframes or flows, if you already have them
  • Reference products for tone—not “copy that app”
  • Deliverable expectation: design system starter, screen set, or both

Mood boards without a screen list waste rounds. So does asking for unlimited revisions. Lock the brief, then scope revision rounds.

Design, not development

GraphicDigits designs UI files and visual systems. We do not ship production code, submit apps to stores, or own backend work from this guide. Your developers—or a separate build partner—implement. If you need clickable validation before engineering, say that in the quote so fidelity matches the question.

When you are ready to hire

Open UI design and request a quote with screens, devices, and brand constraints. Leave deeper UX process and role comparisons to their own pages.

Frequently asked questions about user interface designers

What does a user interface designer do?

A UI designer shapes the look and interactive layer of screens: layout, type, color, components, and states. This article explains that role and how to brief it—not a hire page.

How is this different from UI design services?

This page is an educational guide. Hire happens on UI design. Flows, research, and information architecture belong with UX design or related UX articles—not as a rewrite of those pages.

How does a UI designer differ from a UX designer?

UI focuses on visual and interactive presentation. UX focuses on tasks, flows, and usability structure. Many projects need both; brief which you need first so scopes stay clear.

Do you build or code the finished product?

No. GraphicDigits designs UI files and related visual systems. Engineering, app-store submission, and backend work stay with your development team or a separate build partner.

How do we start a UI design project?

Share primary screens, devices, brand constraints, and any locked flows or wireframes. Request a quote on UI design. Revision rounds are scoped—not unlimited.

Need UI design for your product?

Share key screens and brand constraints. We scope design files—not a coded build.
